USAID Supports Uzbek Exports to the European Union and Eurasian Customs Union

USAID’s Regional Economic Cooperation (REC) Project in partnership with the Uzbekistan Small Businesses’ and Private Entrepreneurship’s Export Promotion Fund (Fund) held a two-day conference on increasing Uzbek exports to the European Union (EU) and the Eurasian Customs Union (EACU) in Samarkand on April 28-29, 2015.
Participants discussed ways for increasing exports from Uzbekistan to the EU and EACU, including via Latvia, developing traditional and alternative avenues for exporting supplies to Europe and the EACU, and new opportunities for exporting horticultural products. Practical recommendations were developed on the export of fruits and vegetables to the EU and EACU markets, as well as to Russian and Kazakh retail chains.
More than one hundred and eighty people from Uzbekistan and its large trading partners, representing state authorities, export promotion agencies, small and medium-sized enterprises, business-associations, international organizations, retail chains and distributors, attended the conference. The conference also featured business matchmaking meetings between Uzbek exporters and buyers from Kazakhstan, Russia, Latvia and other countries.
Jakhongir Mustafayev, Executive Director of the Fund noted, “Our Fund closely cooperates with USAID’s REC Project.  These events have practical implications; in addition to face-to-face discussions, participants may obtain functional knowledge about expanding their trade networks and have opportunities to establish direct business partnerships with buyers of their products. I am confident that the joint work between our Fund and USAID will cultivate further export development capacity for our country.”
